Joyful Jazz — Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, 17th May 2025

Well, what a gig that was!

I've been looking forward to this one for a while, and I'm so happy to say it absolutely delivered. The room was sold out, the band were on fire, and honestly? They made my job very easy. There's nothing quite like walking out onto a stage knowing you've got brilliant musicians behind you — it gives you a freedom and a confidence that the audience can feel.

The programme was something I'd put a lot of thought into — a mix of jazz standards I truly love, alongside some contemporary songs that we approached in a slightly different way, giving them a fresh feel while keeping the soul of them intact. I wanted the afternoon to feel like a journey, with the songs connected by a thread of storytelling, a bit of humour, and — I hope — a lot of honesty. From the comments I received afterwards, it seems that's exactly what people took away from it, which means the world to me.

And then there was the encore. Lovely Day. The moment the band kicked into it, something shifted in the room — people were up on their feet, dancing, singing, just completely lost in it. That's the moment I'll carry with me for a long time.

It's fair to say everybody left Pizza Express Dean Street with a smile on their face. I know I did.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came. Your warmth, your energy, and your gorgeous feedback made the whole afternoon absolutely magical. I'm already hoping there'll be a next time! 🎶

And here's what some of you had to say...

Well, there I was about 20 years ago …keen naïve and eager to learn about this new idiom called Jazz. After moaning to one of my dear school friends who was an accomplished jazz pianist , that I needed something different musically in my life after several years of singing on choirs, she suggested going to a residential jazz course for a week at Cranfield University. This was a daunting prospect but I summoned up my courage and thought to myself ..well if I don’t like it I can leave at any time. So Sunday afternoon I arrive with very few musical chart (which were not in my key because I hadn’t realised that aspect yet!). We all gathered the main lecture theatre singers and musicians and we were asked to come down the front to either sing or play so that we could be grouped together by level of ability. That was scary enough but I managed it!.
